Classification of approved hydro power plants

All hydro power plants included in a successful application for a licence to sell electricity labelled Good Environmental Choice are classified on the basis of the environmental requirements that the hydro power plant meets.

The classification determines the size of the additional fee (fund allocation) that applies to electricity from each hydro power plant. Below is a presentation of the classifications that exist and are to be reported per hydro power plant, in a list intended solely for licensees.

The letter in the brackets indicates which environmental requirements the hydro power plant meets according to criteria 2.6, 2.7, 2.8. Class 1 is for those that meet all three, and class 8 is for those that meet none of the environmental requirements.

Excerpt from Appendix 1 of the criteria for Good Environmental Choice Electricity 2021:

Hydro power included in the sale of electricity labelled with Good Environmental Choice is subject to an annual allocation to the Good Environmental Choice Environmental Fund and Energy Fund, depending on which environmental mitigation measures have been implemented. In this case the following provisions apply:

a) for hydro power with no fish migration route, a fund allocation of SEK 2500/GWh and a fund allocation to the Energy Fund of SEK 500/GWh will be added.

b) for hydro power where the water flow is never distributed across the year, a fund allocation of SEK 1500/GWh and a fund allocation to the Energy Fund of SEK 500/GWh will be added.

c) for hydro power where the water level varies by more than 13 cm/hour over the year, a fund allocation of SEK 1500/GWh and a fund allocation to the Energy Fund of SEK 500/GWh will be added.

d) hydro power that meets all the environmental requirements in 2.6–2.8 is only subject to fund allocation to the Energy Fund at SEK 500/GWh.
