Ecolabelled electricity

There is a difference between renewable electricity and ecolabelled electricity. Through the ecolabelling of renewable electricity, we reduce the negative environmental impact of renewable electricity generation and increase energy efficiency so that our energy use is reduced. Together with customers and energy companies, we achieve a sustainable energy system, for the sake of the climate and biodiversity.

Energy companies that offer electricity labelled Good Environmental Choice help their customers to choose the most sustainable electricity currently available. Good Environmental Choice places tough demands on how electricity is produced and works to ensure that the environmental impact of electricity generation is constantly reduced.

The difference between ecolabelling and guarantees of origin is that origin labelling only guarantees that the electricity comes from a certain energy source, without setting any environmental requirements. What is known as “green electricity” is usually the same as a guarantee of origin for renewable electricity.

Alongside the stringent environmental requirements set by Good Environmental Choice, money for every sold kilowatt-hour of electricity goes to various projects to energy efficiency improvements or repair environmental damage in water flows or forests.

As a Licence holder, the company must meet the environmental requirements in the criteria for Good Environmental Choice Electricity. Compliance is reviewed by Good Environmental Choice every year, providing peace of mind for both the company holding the licence and its electricity customers.

Our environmental requirements

  • Wind and solar power shall be located outside protected natural areas in order to reduce the impact on animals and nature.
  • Hydro power shall have a base flow of water to avoid drying out, and the water shall follow its natural flow. As well as fish migration route and limitation of rapid changes in the water flow for the benefit of plant and animal life.
  • Biofuel must not include stem wood and ash always returned to the forest in order to become a nutrient in the eco cycle again.
  • Wind power and solar panels must be recourse-efficiently recycled when they are dismantled, according to a recycling plan.

Selling electricity labelled Good Environmental Choice

In order to sell electricity labelled Good Environmental Choice on the electricity market or to end consumers, the energy company must have a licence with the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation/Good Environmental Choice. All renewable electricity that meets our criteria can be labelled. In connection with this, the electricity company also receives a certificate to show its customers.

Nina Gulbrandsen. Business Development Nordics

Becour has Good Environmental Choice-certified the Borgund power plant, located in Lærdal, Norway, which is powered by water from the Lærdalselvi River – one of Norway’s most valuable salmon rivers. Together with Østfold Energi, we have carried out two restoration projects to reopen side channels along the river, partly funded by our Good Environmental Choice fund. We hope this will inspire more energy producers to take responsibility for both renewable energy and the biodiversity that surrounds us.

For GodEl, it is a competitive advantage to supply only Good Environmental Choice-ecolabelled electricity to all our customers – we’re the only company in Sweden that does so. It should be easy to make the right choice, and our customers should feel confident that we have chosen the best option for them.
